SRIV (Legacy) freezing on Windows 11

This is one of my favorite games of all time, and mods are a must for me. Also, I had a lot of them costumized/tweaked from years ago, so the Re-Elected one is not an option.

I started playing recently after finishing SR1 for the first time and replaying 2 and 3. I used to play IV back when it came out and years after on Windows 7 with zero issues. It ran like crap, but I had no crashes or freezes, on a generic laptop, and later perfectly on my first gaming PC. I tried the game a bit on Windows 10, but I recall I didn't had any long session.

Recently I installed it on Windows 11 and I have random hard freezes randomly. Mods are not to blame, since It happened first on the second mission, when Zyn attacks the white house, and that was on a fresh install with zero mods. The game just freezes (no CTD), music keeps going, and my system is responsive, but the window is so frozen I can't close the game nor do anything, and have to ctrl+alt+spr to log out, or kill the game with the SuperF4 program.

I have consulted many sources and done the following:

-Capping the FPS to 60.
-Blocking the game with my firewall and adding the domains of the dead servers to my hosts file.
-Disabling fullscreen optimizations and running as Windows 7 compatibility mode.
-Turning off Threaded optimization and running at maximum performance for the game on Nvidia Control Panel.
-Running the game with a script so it will only use 4 cores, or even just 2, of my CPU.
-I already had the directx_Jun2010 installed on my system, as all as every other legacy and current versions.

Issue keeps happening, though. It's totally random and not as frequent as to totally ruin the game, I can sometimes play 2-3 hours without it happening, but... it does, and it's stressful to play like that, more-so because I tweaked some files to earn money much slowly and have to really work for it, and sometimes a freeze will make me loss considerable progress.

Is there anything I'm missing? Is the game just fucked on Windows 11? Anyone have the same issue? Any fix?

Any info will be welcome. Thanks!

I think it's something to do with the workshop build being more unstable than the pre-workshop build. I'm not sure what causes it either or how to fix it, other than "have less big size of mods installed" (some mods are really high res).

Kasumiruuu~ said in a mod release:
I just wanna note that this mod wasn't really 'made' for the workshop build of the game, nor the 'Legacy' build. I actually made them specifically for the pre-workshop build of the game - it's the one that works best for me and some other users I know - which is why each of these clothes will replace an actual shirt texture in the game. So consider them very simplistic plug-and-play mods - vanilla-friendly.

I'm getting confused, lol. Isn't Legacy the "pre-workshop build" and Re-Elected the "workshop build"?

So, it is a known issue?

I was digging everywhere and found out running the game as Vulkan using dxvk should fix the issue. I'll try next weekend, pray for me. T_T

The "pre-workshop" means the lack of Steam Workshop support in this case, in the game's earlier years. It is not available through either stores, so one'd have to do some serious digging to find it.

As for dxvk, feel free to holler if you have troubles, I feel it is quite simple in most cases. You'll need the x86 versions

BEFORE YOU TRY ANY THING DOWN BELOW I would make the game as vanilla as possible, save the 60 FPS cap you did.
(No compatibility mode. No CPU script changes. Just a default state of the game.) A fresh reinstall or verification of
the files on steam is up to your discretion.

1. When on Steam, go to your settings and switch to offline mode.

2. The mod MixFix might help you as well. Try to see if the SRTT (Original/win32) version of the mod works with SRIV (Legacy/game).

3. I'd also just see if Ultimate ASI Loader would do the trick by itself (Win32 version)

4. What I did (and it may not work for everyone) was follow a guide on the Steam forums regarding some Steam Depot shenanigans
by a user named "Batata" I hope this helps. :)

Well, the first time I got a freeze was on a totally fresh install on a new system (that haven't had the game before) with zero mods, so no need to verify files, lol.

MixFix is only for the Re-Elected version, but I'll try to look for the guide you speak about.

For pre-workshop. On steam right click the game, properties, go to Game Versions & Beta's
Under private versions, add this code - sdafsdacnucpsacsyuiacyusbacuidsa

You will now have a version called pre_mod_test, so if you more or less want to run a pre workshop build, this is a way to do so.
However you may lose access to dlc, but milage may vary,

No idea how you know this, but thank you!
Will probably try it at a real later point but it's good to know it's there.
