Hi when i buy a game & i add it to steam why do i have to download gigabytes just to get the game working on steam when i bought the game & the whole game is on the disc. Sorry i don't understand.

Because the whole game is not on the disc. Steamworks boxed releases often hold back critical data so that pirates can't crack/play the game early before the actual scheduled release date. The missing data is simply patched/updated during your install and is usually 1-2Gb.
