A prequel would be truly awesome. For example, Julius is the protagonist and you discover how Saints started from the complete zero. They could resolve some mysteries regarding his and Dex betrayal too... Or put a twist and show how Eric Gryphon set up everything.

...But then Saints Row 2 events wouldn't happen. And this game is the most important in the series, actually.
Well in one of the original story concepts for SR3 there were supposed to be several more endings. One where Shaundi joins STAG, another one where she joins the Syndicate and finally a third one where we see "shadowy figure" cough Gat flying a helicopter towards Steelport.
First two sound shitty but the third one is very interesting.
