can saints row 2 cd key be used on steam

hi there i'm new to the page and was wondering is saints row 2 steam compatible cause i'm not sure if you can use the product code on steam application or you have to install the game then add the game to steam using the add non-steam option?

The retail boxed release of Saints Row 2 PC is Steamworks only. The key that comes with it only registers on Steam.
 
so the product code can or can't be used to register the game to the my library or will i have to install the game normally then add it using the add non-game option?
 
You can use the code in the manual to register it to your Steam library. You can also install it from CD that would prompt you for the code as part of the Steam install, so it doesn't have to download as much data. You would never use it to add a non-Steam game since it IS a Steam game.
 
thank you i installed the game via disc and it was installed into my steam library, one more question for the GOTR mod is winrar ok to extract the files to the game?
