To my knowledge foobar2000 has conversion capabilities, so you can use it to convert to .wav. Make sure it retains the necessary info of stereo channel and 44100 hz. Never tried for the context of this guide though

The bug is caused by the secret area trigger located within the Pirate Ship Cove map chunk, I assume it happens because it doesn't spawn on load and the game freaks out while trying to count it as a secret I also assume that place is what you meant by "island"
