How Is This Game?

Okay, forgetting about the reviews because I have almost never liked the way the critics have treated Saints Row games, and thought that SR and SR2 were much better than the reviews depicted.

So since we are all presumably SR fans in here, I wanted to get all of your opinions before deciding on when to buy this, and whether or not I should get it for PC, PS4 Pro, or XBox One S.

Thanks everyone!!!

Edit: By the way, I just wanted to be clear that I am well aware that this game is NOT a sequel to Saints Row, or trying to be a SR game. ;)

It's okay, but I still like SR2 and SR3 better. I really miss the customizations, and it's a bit too childish for me. I agree with Skolia that the gameplay is repetitive too. But the world map is beautiful and unique, if you don't mind the overly bright colors and cartoonish bumper-car vehicles. It's got beautiful lighting, and we finally have real day/night cycles just like SR1 and SR2. Although the city is not very big (much smaller than SR2), it has a lot of accessible vertical levels and elevators all over, so the vertical space can make up for the lack of total area somewhat. There are, however, very few interiors, and Volition seems to hate actual doors that open and close, since you teleport into cars and teleport into the few interiors that do exist.

The PC version requires a VERY powerful graphics card to get any kind of decent frame rate. For comparison, my current system, which is a few years old and has an i7 with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, allows me to play all the Saints Row games at high quality, 30fps, 1920×1080. With Agents of Mayhem, I get about 10-20 fps (sometimes even lower) at 1280×720 at the lowest graphics quality setting. At the highest quality setting, I get about 2-3 fps. So if you don't have a beefy gaming rig, you may want to get the console version.

And I agree with you -- SR and SR2 were MUCH better than the reviews depicted.

I didn't realize I had this account before I created the AskMaleAnything account I used for the OP, so since there is a problem with the email in that account, I will go back to using my old one I had forgotten lol.

It's alright. The gameplay is fun, although somewhat repetitive. The story is somewhat... cliched.

Someone once said, "Stories in videogames are like stories in porn. It's expected to be there, but its not that important."

Admittedly the guy who said that was one of the creators of DOOM at a time when consoles and PC's didn't really have the tech for the kinds of narratives, voiceovers, and cinematics we have become accustomed to in the modern age. But I guess I am a little old school in that as long as the gameplay is really good, I am a lot more forgiving of storyline vagrancies.

My Qosmio laptop was top of the line when it came out and I bought it in lol 2013. Even with an i7 processor, the used-to-be-a-beast of a lappy is really showing its age with a GeForce 770m GPU. Yes, I can run GTA V at nice resolution and at a decent framerate, but that game came out about a year and a half ago on PC. All my current games run gorgeously on my machine. However, newer games are just really pushing it too much, and I wouldn't want to try and run this game on a laptop with a 770m.

I might consider at least giving it a try if I didn't already own a PS4 Pro and an XBox One S. Clearly, until I build my planned desktop in a month or two, with a much newer graphics card, I will stick with console versions for now.

This game looks a lot like a very dark Ratchet & Clank with superpowers, which isn't a bad thing. I think I will wait for it to go on sale, since I am already WAY behind in my currently owned and unopened games. But AoM sounds intriguing, to be honest.

Gameplay:
SR v2.0 beta

Characters:
Class based; non customisable (aside from palette swap skins)

Weaponry:
Fixed per class

Vehicles:
Cars / trucks only; non customisable (aside from Agency vehicle palettes)

Progression:
Perk-like; waxes MMO-ish; character unlocks

Missions:
Mostly pew-pew based; somewhat repetitive (esp. on one's lonesome)

Visuals:
SR HD, with a CGI anime twist

Sandbox:
Nice setting; smallish map; still non interactive

Narrative:
Does its job, but Citizen Kane it isn't

Difficulty:
Easy-to-moderate

Replay:
Medium-to-low; no co-op; collect-athon only; DLC undefined

Performance (PC):
Decent, but not well optimised per se (7970M {2Gb} / i7 3840QM {16Gb} @ 1600x900 + High)

Summation:
Projects like a SR game in its early development stages. The game is moderately enjoyable and would be a worthy SR successor, IF it had the trappings SR did (and co-op).

Verdict:
6.5 / 10 -- Hopefully it spawns a more SR-esque sequel.
