Embarrassing question

How do you eat your food, or drink, or smoke in the game? I know to press "Q" brings up my weapons selection HUD. Or I can just use my Mouse wheel and scroll through them. When I press "Q", I can see the smaller food/drink/drug palette, but I can't figure out how to use any of those items. Playing around a bit I found that if I press 'Q', then hit my arrow keys that I can then move to that smaller health palette....but I am still unable to figure out exactly how to use any of the 4 items that appear in it. I press 'Enter', but that didn't do anything....so I'm kind of lost here. I've been having to just run and hide at times to get my health back. But now I'm playing Hardcore and that's not all that easy to do when you have high notoriety at times.

I totally missed the animation that plays when doing any of those...I'm not used to seeing our character/player ACTUALLY have an animation for any of those functions. I'm used to hearing the 'noise' of eating or drinking, but this caught me off guard actually seeing the eating animation play out.
