I recently bought the Humble pack to experience this game again with my little brother. It's been good bonding, we got through SR3 and started SRIV.
When we got to the mission where you first escape the sim, we had to retry a few times, and each time it was a crash when hitting "retry from checkpoint". He describes this as a loading screen that freezes, then the game closes out.
I tried a lot of fixes that were on a wikihow, unsubbed mods, etc.
