Model viewer

Is there a current way to extract or atleast view models from saints row the third? because i have seen models extracted by other people but i cant find a tool to do so.

The source files and intermediate file formats, the xml game data, for character meshes are not shipped with the game and I don't think will be releasing those. We will be releasing character templates as mentioned in the thread IdolNinja pointed you to. This will help you make your own clothing items and characters in the future. If someone manages to extract data from our crunched binaries into usable 3d application data that's totally up to them.

Yeah, there is no way to extract character models from the game and then import them back to it, so templates are our best shot. I wanted to ask which character models are you planning to release as templates? I know there's a long way ahead, but maybe we should create a poll for us modders to vote on which NPC character models we would like to see released as templates (besides story characters like Pierce, Shaundi, Zimos, etc.).

Also as far as I know DM98, the models you've seen were obtained through extensive backwards-engineering (you've most likely seen them available for 3D posing programs - am I wrong?).

That's probably not the way they're going to do it. They are most likely just going to release the skeletons of the NPCS with some other parameters to make them usable. For items, they might just be programmer slugs.

I doubt that's all we are going to get. Skeletons alone for NPC modifying won't assist us in producing anything meaningful and respectful to the game's art style. In addition to the skeletons we would need a base rig (how the character's limbs animate) as a base or a guideline for whatever character we are going to modify, so that the end result would be somewhat closer to what Volition intended. I don't think there's just one shared skeleton for all NPCs, as each character has unique cloth-simulation-related bones.

Randall himself stated that he is planning on providing "Character NPC Mesh Templates" at some point, these templates, I suspect, would be a selection of existing models from SR:TT along with their diffuse maps, normal maps and any additional shader-related maps.

and i had seen some in gta iv and gta sanandreas the one i seen were johnny, pierce, shaundie and the gat bobble heads

It is possible for the community to make their own model viewer. We would just need more information on the CCMESH_PC file format. It contains texture information as well as the number of vertices as well as the offset to the vertices that are inside the GCMESH_PC files. With some hard coded values (since I haven't figured out the format yet) I was able to produce these:

MV_Alien.png
MV_kinzie_head.png

The first image is a Zin from SR4 and the second image is harder to see but it is a profile of Kinzie's head from SR3.

I started writing this and once I hit about 3 pages of structures I realized that I was making something that was impossible to read and was pretty much in over my head too. I'll see if I can't con a rendering guy over here...
